Cap de Formentor is one of Mallorca’s most dramatic driving destinations, but private cars cannot freely reach the lighthouse throughout the summer season. The Ma-2210 crosses a narrow peninsula with cliffs, beaches and viewpoints where parking capacity is limited. In 2026, official access restrictions apply for more than five months. A rental car remains useful for reaching Port de Pollença, but most visitors must complete the journey using the public shuttle bus.
Cap de Formentor Driving Restrictions in 2026
The regulated period runs from 15 May through 18 October 2026, including both dates. Restrictions apply every day between 10:00 and 22:00 on sections of the Ma-2210 between Port de Pollença and Formentor Lighthouse.
The regulations divide the road into two sections. The first runs from kilometre 2 to approximately kilometre 8.7 and includes access towards Formentor Beach. Private vehicles may enter this section while authorized parking spaces remain available. When the beach parking reaches capacity, an automatic barrier closes and access is limited to authorized vehicles.
The second section runs from kilometre 8.7 to kilometre 19.6 at Formentor Lighthouse. During regulated hours, ordinary private cars and motorcycles cannot enter. Access is limited to authorized vehicles, public transport, bicycles, residents, emergency services and certain vehicles transporting people with reduced mobility.
The restriction is enforced with barriers, variable signs and number plate recognition. Entering after a barrier has closed or driving into the lighthouse section without authorization can result in a penalty.
Entering before 10:00 is not permission to remain in the restricted lighthouse section. Vehicles that arrive earlier must leave that section before the regulation begins. Visitors should not rely on an early arrival unless there is enough time to drive back beyond the control point before 10:00.
How to Visit Formentor with a Rental Car
The most reliable plan is to drive to Port de Pollença, leave the rental car in a permitted space and continue on TIB bus line 334. This route connects Alcúdia, Port de Pollença and Formentor Lighthouse.
On the peninsula, the bus stops at Mirador des Colomer, Formentor Beach, Cala Figuera and Cala Murta, and the lighthouse. This makes it possible to visit the main viewpoints without moving a car between small parking areas.
Free parking areas are available along the service roads beside the Ma-2200 ring road around Port de Pollença. Useful bus stops in the direction of Formentor include Port de Pollença, Bóquer and Can Singala. Current departure times should be checked on the TIB website before the trip.
Payment by bank card or the local intermodal transport card is recommended on the bus. Travellers should keep enough time for the return journey, particularly if they plan to leave Port de Pollença for Palma or another resort on the same evening.
A rental car still provides considerable flexibility. Visitors staying in Palma, Alcúdia, Can Picafort or another part of Mallorca can reach the bus connection independently and combine Formentor with Pollença Old Town or an evening in Port de Pollença.
Can You Drive to the Lighthouse Outside Restricted Hours?
Outside the regulated dates and hours, private vehicles may generally use the road when it is open and conditions permit. However, the absence of a seasonal restriction does not guarantee easy access. Temporary closures, roadworks, severe weather or emergency measures may still apply.
The Ma-2210 is paved but demanding. It contains sharp bends, steep drops, narrow sections and heavy bicycle traffic. Drivers should maintain a low speed, leave sufficient space when overtaking cyclists and avoid stopping for photographs outside designated areas.
Parking and stopping are prohibited along the restricted lighthouse road unless a space is specifically marked with white lines. A vehicle can be penalized even when it is only partly left on the carriageway. A viewpoint that appears briefly empty should not be treated as an unofficial parking space.
Driving after 22:00 avoids the daytime restriction but introduces darkness, limited visibility and wildlife on a winding road. It is not a sensible solution for visitors unfamiliar with the area. Travelling by bus during daylight is normally safer and provides better views.
Before departure, check the official DGT or Consell de Mallorca page rather than relying on an older travel article. Formentor access rules have changed between seasons, and navigation apps may not display live parking capacity or barrier status.
Rental Car, Parking and Fine Protection
A compact car is the most practical choice for northern Mallorca. It is easier to park in Port de Pollença and more comfortable on narrow village streets. A large SUV provides no advantage at Formentor because vehicle size does not create an exemption from access restrictions.
When comparing offers through RentGo Mallorca, review the deposit, insurance excess, mileage and fuel conditions for the selected vehicle. RentGo Mallorca operates as a comparison and affiliate platform, while the local supplier named in the booking provides the car and sets the rental conditions.
Traffic and parking fines remain the renter’s responsibility. The rental supplier may also charge an administration fee for identifying the driver and processing a notice received after the vehicle has been returned. Insurance does not normally cover fines caused by entering a restricted road.
Photograph the car at collection and make sure existing marks are recorded. Save the local supplier’s telephone number and allow additional time when returning from Formentor, as summer traffic can build around Pollença, Alcúdia and the northern approaches to Palma.
A practical day starts with a morning drive to Port de Pollença, followed by the bus to Mirador des Colomer, Formentor Beach and the lighthouse. After returning to the car, travellers can continue to Pollença Old Town or Alcúdia without repeating the mountain road.
Cap de Formentor remains one of Mallorca’s essential destinations in 2026, but it should be planned as a combined car and public transport journey. Parking before the restricted section and using line 334 avoids fines, reduces congestion and allows visitors to experience the peninsula without worrying about barriers or limited lighthouse parking.
